Ingredients

  • lentils - 1 2/5 cups (350 g) (brown or green)
  • onions - 1 large head
  • bacon - 7 oz (200 g)
  • carrots - 2
  • garlic - 4 cloves
  • celery - 1 sprig
  • canned tomatoes - 10.5 oz (300 g)
  • oregano - 1 tablespoon
  • bay leaf - 1
  • savory - 1 tsp
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • chili pepper - 1, if you like
  • oil – can use olive oil, too

Preparation

Put the cleaned lentils in a deep pot, cover with water and boil for 5 minutes. Then pour them into a colander to drain.

In a pot, heat the oil and fry the onion that you've cut into small slices, the finely diced bacon and half the crushed garlic for about 5 minutes. Add more oil and add the remaining garlic, then the chopped thin slices of carrot, celery, tomatoes, oregano, lentils, 4 1/5 cups (1 liter) of water and the other spices.

Cover the pot with a lid and boil on a slow fire until the lentils are fully cooked. Optionally, serve the lentils with bread croutons that you've fried or baked with a little oil and mixed spices.find similar recipes here
