  • bread - 1 medium sized, brown
  • milk - 4/5 cup (200 ml)
  • apples - 3

  • sugar - 2/3 cup (150 g)

  • vanilla - a pod or essence
  • milk - about 1/5 cup (65 ml)
  • flour - 1 - 2 tbsp, for thickening

How to make

Remove the crusts from the bread, cut the middle part into coarse cubes. Pour the milk over the bread and let it soak for 20 min. so it can be kneaded.

Mix the rest of the milk with the sugar. Break the 3 eggs into it, grate the rind of 1 lemon, add the scraped halves of the vanilla pod which has been cut in half lengthwise.

Beat everything and add a pinch of salt. Add 1-2 tbsp flour, so that the mixture thickens.

Cut the apples into crescents. Mash the bread that has absorbed the milk and press it along the bottom and walls of a buttered tray - the layer needs to be heavy and moist but it will dry a bit during baking.

Arrange the apple crescents on top, beautifully into concentric circles. Press the arranged apples lightly on top and pour on the milk-egg aromatic mixture.

Put the apple pie to bake in a preheated moderate oven for about 1 hour.
