Caipirinha is a type of cocktail that's closely tied to the traditions of Brazil. In the past several years it's been a preferred cocktail in many parts of the world and is one of the most refreshing.
There's never a bountiful Brazilian carnival without a sip of its freshness to go around. This cocktail contains traditional Brazilian cachaça - a beverage similar to rum that's made from pure sugarcane, making it stand apart from regular rum, which is made from molasses.
Nowadays, cachaça can be found almost everywhere in the world, making Caipirinha just as popular.
Cut the half lime into thick crescents, so you get about 3-4 pieces. Put them at the bottom of a glass, add sugar and press down with a wooden mallet or the handle of a wooden spoon to get the sugar into the lime.
Add ice cubes and pour in the cachaça. Put it in a shaker and shake, pour the cocktail back into the glass and decorate with more lime.
But if you're finding it difficult to find traditional Brazilian cachaça, you can improvise with rum Caipirissima or the Russian version of the cocktail, which is called Caipiroska.
4 fresh strawberries, 1/2 a lime, 2 tsp brown sugar, 3 1/3 tbsp vodka, ice.
Put the finely chopped lime in a deep glass, add the sugar and press and mash the lime with a suitable utensil so it mixes with the sugar. Add the strawberries, chopped into pieces, and press and mash again.
Put the ice in and pour in water, stir and decorate with a strawberry.
Don't be afraid to improvise with fruits, the cocktail is good with exotic fruits and wild berries.
