It is difficult to define happiness. It may be said that it provides a feeling of joy, quiet satisfaction, gratification and pleasure. For some, happiness can be found in the little things in life, for others it is mutual love, and for still others - making their wishes come true.
Of course, it's nothing new that fruits and vegetables are incredibly healthy for our bodies, since they are a source of minerals, vitamins and fiber. They protect against a multitude of diseases, such as diabetes, aneurysm, stroke and heart diseases. A recent study has also shown that the regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is beneficial for mental health.
Scientists used the data they obtained from 13 983 people who were over 16 years of age, who participated in a health survey in 2010 and 2011. The researchers noticed that the most mentally stable volunteers ate a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day (2.8 oz (80 g) - 3.5 oz (100 g) per serving).
31% of the volunteers who suffered from no psychological problems ate between 3 - 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, while 28% ate 2 servings.
Researchers concluded that the consumption of fruits and vegetables made people happier than alcohol. Plus, alcohol is a depressant and long-term overconsumption of it can lead to serious problems.
The consumption of alcohol is detrimental for a number of reasons. Scientists have proven long ago that extensive alcohol use leads to disturbances in consciousness, liver problems, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, heart failure, alcoholic polyneuropathy, menstrual disorders in women, dementia and all kinds of other issues. Alcohol also causes certain psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, fear, anger and feelings of sadness.
Scientists are convinced that the study will surely make plenty of folks think well on whether they should reach for the cup or enjoy a nice fresh salad the next time they feel unhappy.
