Homemade Canadian Specialties


Canadian cuisine is a blend of flavors and aromas that are characteristic of European cuisine but there is a number of purely Canadian specialties. To immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this vast country without traveling far, you can prepare some of the most favored Canadian recipes yourself.

Pumpkin Soup

Ingredients: 17.5 oz pumpkin, 4 cups water, 1 onion head, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp paprika, salt to taste.


Preparation: Cut the pumpkin and put it to boil in the water along with the onion. It should be softened enough after about 40 min., pass it through a strainer with the onion. Add salt to taste to this mixture, then the paprika and milk. Serve the soup warm along with toast smeared with butter.

Pork with Broad Beans

Ingredients: 1 1/5 cups dried broad beans, 4 cups water, 17.5 oz pork, 2 tbsp oil, 1 tsp powdered mustard, salt and black pepper to taste.

Preparation: Wash the broad beans and soak them in the water for 5-6 hours. Separately, cut the pork into large pieces and braise them in the oil. To them, add the softened broad beans, mustard, salt and black pepper. Pour on the same water which was used to soak the broad beans and boil without a lid until the meat softens and water evaporates. Serve thus prepared meat while still warm.

Baked Ham

Ingredients: 2 lb plain ham, 1 cup orange marmalade, 2 tbsp honey, 1/2 cup meat broth, 4/5 cup raisins.


Preparation: Put the ham to bake in the oven and constantly keep pouring on the mixture of honey and marmalade over it. Once it gets an appetizing crisp, take it out, cut it into slices and add the broth and raisins to its sauce. Let it boil for a few more minutes in the sauce and serve with a garnish of boiled pumpkin.

Breaded Bacon

Ingredients: 17.5 oz smoked bacon, 2 eggs, ground rusks, oil for frying.

Preparation: Cut the bacon into slices, dip them in the eggs and roll in the rusks, then braise in the highly heated oil.
