Traditional Mexican Drinks

Tequila

Mexican drinks are an inseparable part of traditional Mexican cuisine and stun with their variety. No matter if hot or cold, sweet or a little bitter and whether they contain alcohol or not, it's unthinkable to prepare a Mexican dish at home and not serve it with one of the drinks characteristic of Mexico. Here are the most famous:

1. Tequila, having become emblematic for all of Mexico.

It's divided into 100% tequila agave and the so-called mixtures, these in turn being anejo, reposado and blanco. This type of beverage is made from the agave plant and drunk at any time during the day. It's served in glasses along with salt and lemon, typically drunk in 1 gulp.

2. Mezcal, no less popular than tequila.

Mexican Drinks

Also made from agave and is native to the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Normally this drink is colorless but you may also find yellowish versions of it. It's interesting to note that when they bottle Mezcal they put a worm, known as a maguey worm, in the bottle.

3. Wine.

It is not a significantly important drink in Mexican cuisine but when served usually has a full-bodied taste. It's most common in Northern Mexico, considered to be the area where they make the highest quality Mexican wines.

4. Beer.

In contrast to the European method of serving and drinking beer, in Mexico it's served with a slice of lemon.

5. Rompope.

This is a type of punch with a nice creamy color and is made from milk, ginger, almonds, vanilla and egg yolks that are heated in a water bath and served with rum once cooled.

Tequila and Sangrita

6. The Margarita cocktail that has become a classic.

Made from tequila, lime juice, cointreau or triple sec and serve with salt and lemon.

7. Sangrita.

A nonalcoholic drink with a very acerbic and highly spicy taste. It is made from orange juice, blended tomatoes, onions and serrano peppers.
