Mix together the dry ingredients - flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg. Separately, beat the eggs with sugar, milk and add the melted butter with vanilla. Pour the liquid mixture into the dry mixture and stir.
Lay out 12 muffin cups, or a well buttered muffin tray. In every one, pour in a bit of the mixture, a layer of sliced fruit, mixed with some breadcrumbs if too moist, and top up with more of the mixture for the muffins. Do not fill it all the way to the top of the cups.
Sprinkle all of the muffins with the mixed together cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Put the muffins with butter to bake for about 20 minutes in a heated 392°F (200 °C) oven. Cool them and then remove them from the cups.
