Put the wine, spices, sugar and orange rinds in a pot. Heat it slightly until the sugar melts. Add the pears, make sure they are entirely submerged in the wine.
Leave them to saute on low heat for about 30 min. until softened. If the pears are too ripe, decrease the boiling time to about 20 min.
Take the pears out with a slotted spoon and continue boiling the syrup for another 30 min. until reduced and thickened. Let it cool and strain it.
Serve the pears with the wine syrup poured over them and a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.
